CHEMDOX is the authoring software to create your safety data sheets (SDSs) in accordance with:
- GHS system of the United Nations (UNECE)
- REACH in conjunction with the CLP Regulations (CLP; EU implementation of the GHS)
- OSHA, appendix D to 29 CFR 1910.1200 of the United States
- all national GHS implementations where a CHEMDOX country package is available
Starting from your (automatically) classified product you can create safety data sheets (SDSs) easily and in many different languages for international use.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS / MSDS) basic settings
In each specific safety data sheet (SDS) for a given product (substance or mixture) the following choices are supported:
- Selection of the supplier (i.e. distributor, legal person with responsibility for the created safety data sheet (SDS))
- Intended use
- Selection of the country for which the safety data sheet (SDS) is being created
- Selection of the language in which the safety data sheet (SDS) is being created
- Applicable GHS regulation
- Version of the document
- Selection of the custom template used to create the safety data sheet (SDS)
- Country-specific settings (e.g. national occupational exposure limits)
Templates
In CHEMDOX the creation of safety data sheets (SDS) is based on templates.
Each template defines:
- LAYOUT such as positioning, fonts, colors, tables, etc.
- RULES for the output of:
- Substance and classification data from the substance database
- Texts, phrases or text blocks from the phrase catalog
- Graphics (e.g. symbols and pictograms for labeling) from the symbol library
- Supplier information (e.g. address, logo, etc.)
CHEMDOX comes with a set of standard templates for different legal provisions and sectors. Use the standard templates to easily develop your own templates with your own personal layout and rules.
Layout
- Page size, margins, etc.
- Styles: format settings for certain areas (e.g., heading, text, etc.)
- Format settings
- Font (own CI-font, serif, sans-serif, fixed)
- Style (bold, italic, underline or crossed out)
- Color for text and background
- Character translation (lowercase or uppercase characters, first character as uppercase)
- Delimiter (any character for separation of bulleted lists)
- Prefix (any character at the beginning of a text segment; Default = none)
- Suffix (any character at the end of a text segment; Default = dot)
- Graphical options
- .jpg, .png, .gif
- Scaling
- Layout options in sections for text, data, graphics
- next to heading (text in a separate column)
- under heading
- in columns
- in tables
Tables
- More than 20 predefined, multi-column tables
- Can be placed in any section of the safety data sheet (SDS)
- Each table column can be activated / deactivated
- Individually adjustable column widths
Graphics
- Choose from existing hazard symbols / pictograms: e.g. GHS, DSD, transportation law
- Choose from existing graphics: e.g. mandatory signs, prohibition signs, protective gloves, protective clothing, waste types and specific warning signs
- Use your own graphics (e.g. logo)
Rules in Templates
The output of contents is based on rules within the template.
Contents such as substance data and classification data come from the substance database; phrases and text blocks come from the phrase catalog, graphics (e.g. symbols and pictograms for labeling) come from the symbol library or supplier information section (e.g. address, logo).
These contents can be displayed NEVER, ALWAYS, or SOMETIMES, by taking into account the DEFAULT settings, or on the basis of individually definable RULES.
e.g.
Display a certain phrase
IF
"physical state" = "gaseous"
AND
"odor" = "no odor is perceptible"
CHEMDOX Phrase Catalog
The CHEMDOX phrase catalog contains all of the text blocks and their translations that you need for your documents (safety data sheets (SDS), operating instructions, etc.).

CHEMDOX uses correct technical terms which were taken directly from the legal texts. This also applies to all translations. The CHEMDOX phrase catalog comes in many languages.
Phrases that contain variable (substance) data from the database are also included, using placeholders such as: "store at temperatures not exceeding {$MAX_STORE_TEMP}".
The phrases are stored in the catalog in such a way that they can be used as a heading, sentence, "proclamation", or in a bulleted list.
e.g.
- When using do not eat, drink or smoke.
- When using do not eat, drink or smoke!
- WHEN USING DO NOT EAT, DRINK OR SMOKE
- as part of a flowing bulleted list:
- keep away from combustible material / when using do not eat, drink or smoke / keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking
- as part of a bulleted list (with individually set bullets)
- when using do not eat, drink or smoke
- keep away from combustible material
- keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking
The phrase catalog can be extended with your own wording and text blocks.
EUPhraC Module "ES" and EUPhraC Module "SDS Main Body"
Two additional phrase catalogs, EUPhraC Module "ES" and EUPhraC Module "SDS Main Body", are available in about 35 languages as an option:
English (GB), English (US), French, Portuguese, German, Greek, Romanian, Turkish, Czech, Latvian, Russian, Hungarian, Croatian, Lithuanian, Slovak, Bulgarian, Danish, Norwegian, Slovenian, Estonian, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Finnish, Polish, Swedish, Ukrainian, Serbian, Icelandic, Malay, Chinese, Chinese trad. Additional languages, countries and versions
As the person responsible, you can create safety data sheets (SDSs) for your products easily in your native language.
By changing the basic settings, your safety data sheets (SDSs) are then converted with a few easy steps to other languages or countries with the relevant national regulations. Safety data sheets (SDSs) are automatically versioned by CHEMDOX.
